Thaipusam

Thaipusam

தைப்பூசம் (Taippūcam)

Thaipusam is celebrated by the Indian worldwide. Mostly in India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. We the Malaysians are unique as we are living in a multiracial country- Mainly the Malays, Chinese, & Indians. What is the relevant Thaipusam with Malaysians? PUBLIC HOLIDAY! No! It is not just about the holiday. How many of you truly understand what Thaipusam is all about?

Thaipusam is celebrated on the full moon day (10th Tamil month of Thai- January/February). It is a celebration dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Murugan (youngest son of Shiva and his wife Parvati). Devotees will get in trance. Some are being carried by their siblings, wives, husbands or other relatives. Many men (and also the occasional woman) have themselves shaved at one of the many barbers- you will see many devotees walking around bald headed.

One of the aspects that make Thaipusam so fascinating is the way that devotees pay penance to Lord Murugan. Some pierce their skin, tongue or cheeks with Vel skewers. There could also be a man hanging on multiple hooks while being pushed forward. Some had many hooks in their backs with colourful decorations. A few times we noticed that some where blessed by others; which led to great excitement with the devotee expressed by dancing unconsciously and waving arms wildly.

Do have a look on the videos of last year's Thaipusam:

OBESE or UNDERWEIGHT?

Obese or Underweight? Or Neither?

Which will be your preference? Personally, or even generally the second from left I would say. Being overweight or underweight are sometimes not our fault. It could be genetically inherited. The same goes to those who are underweight- who are trying to very, very hard to gain weight.

Obese is another more dangerous level after overweight. It is a disease faced many, many people around the world. Metro UK said that nearly 1.7 billion overweight and 475 million people are having obesity. Obesity is very harmful and could lead to many, many diseases like coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, and the list goes on and on. Alarm or wake up call? It is time for generations to be moving on and not too relying on fast foods. Eating healthy food could save your own life. Indulging in exercises at least three times a week would keep you from harm. There are other ways to counter obesity:
  • Think about what you eat & why
  • Cut down on portions while eating the same foods
  •  Use the "buddy system." and so on...

Being underweight is generally thought as healthier compared to being obese. How true is that? Just like obesity, underweight has its health risks as well. Our immune systems are weakened, lead to anaemia, infertility, etc. There are things we could do to gain weight or at the very least, be healthier even being underweight:
  • Eat more frequently
  • Consume lean protein from fish, meat, & beans
  • Take more starchy carbohydrates and so on...

Question is, which one are you? Or neither as you have the normal BMI rate. When was the last time have you checked your BMI? Do check it here!

Left or right?
The choice is yours!

Optical Illusions

Optical Illusion is defined by The Free Dictionary as "a visually perceived image that is deceptive or misleading."

According to Wikipedia, however, "An optical illusion (also called a visual illusion) is characterized by visually perceived images that differ from objective reality. The information gathered by the eye is processed in the brain to give a perception that does not tally with a physical measurement of the stimulus source."

There are many types of optical illusions. Wikipedia never fails to provide examples. They have listed down all the possible lists of optical illusions here.

Here are some examples of amazing pictures with optical illusions from Google Images:

Metal Rock- Yay or Nay?

How many of you here have interests towards heavy metal rock? People tend to see heavy metal rock as the symbol of satan or destruction. The music sounds like it is. But when certain people tend to give it a try & listen to it, they will get addicted to it. I am the one! Yea! It does not change me. It is not about satan. All those are misunderstandings I would say.

It started just two months back when I listened to Our Last Night. I began with their fourth album Age of Ignorance. Their older albums tend to be more towards screaming which I could not understand. But yea, for a start, Age of Ignorance is the deal. Do check out their covers for a few songs as well:
3. Stay

For those who want to know more & have interests to try listening to one, here are some recommendations which I found quite interesting:

Above all, my special thanks to my elder bro who recommended me all these songs. lol Wait for me, bro. I'm still catching up! haha.
